Which Cunard liner was nicknamed the “Green Goddess”?

The story behind the answer

RMS Caronia was the Cunard liner nicknamed the “Green Goddess.”

Caronia entered service in 1949 and was distinguished by her pale green exterior paint, which inspired the nickname. She was designed as a luxury liner for long-distance travel and became especially associated with cruises for affluent passengers.

The ship was one of Cunard’s most recognizable postwar vessels. Her public rooms and extensive passenger amenities reflected the company’s effort to combine traditional ocean-liner service with the growing appeal of leisure cruising.

Caronia’s career later became difficult as jet aircraft captured much of the long-distance passenger market. Cunard sold her in the 1960s, and she changed hands several times before being laid up. She was eventually scrapped after an unsuccessful attempt to preserve her as a hotel ship.
