Which cuckoo migrates from North America to South America and is famous for crossing the Gulf of Mexico?

The story behind the answer

The yellow-billed cuckoo migrates from North America to South America and is famous for crossing the Gulf of Mexico.

Yellow-billed cuckoos breed across much of the United States, Mexico, and parts of Canada. Many individuals winter in South America, and some undertake a long nonstop crossing of the Gulf of Mexico during migration.

The bird is an unusual cuckoo because it builds its own nest and raises its own young in most circumstances. It is also strongly associated with outbreaks of caterpillars, which can provide abundant food during the breeding season.

The yellow-billed cuckoo is often confused with the black-billed cuckoo, another North American migrant. The two species overlap in range, but the yellow-billed cuckoo has a conspicuous yellow lower bill and reddish wing panels.
