Which C.S. Lewis work is a science-fiction novel about a voyage to Mars?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s science-fiction novel about a voyage to Mars is Out of the Silent Planet.

Published in 1938, the novel follows Dr. Elwin Ransom after he is abducted and taken aboard a spacecraft. He travels to Mars, which Lewis calls Malacandra, and encounters intelligent species whose societies differ sharply from those of Earth.

Out of the Silent Planet was the first book in Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its sequels are Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. Although the trilogy uses interplanetary travel and speculative technology, Lewis also builds the story around moral, theological, and linguistic ideas.

The title reflects the novel’s portrayal of Earth as a spiritually damaged world whose inhabitants have become isolated. Readers sometimes confuse the book with Perelandra because both feature Ransom, but only the first novel centers on his journey to Mars.
