C.S. Lewis’s Perelandra retells the Christian creation and fall story on the fictional planet Perelandra. The novel presents a newly created world whose first inhabitants face a decisive temptation.
Elwin Ransom travels to the planet and becomes involved in a conflict involving the Green Lady, the King, and an adversarial figure. Lewis uses the setting to explore free will, innocence, evil, and the consequences of disobedience without simply reproducing the biblical narrative on Earth.
Perelandra is the second book in the Space Trilogy, following Out of the Silent Planet and preceding That Hideous Strength. Its alternate title, Voyage to Venus, reflects the identification of Perelandra with Venus. Readers sometimes confuse this novel with The Magician’s Nephew, which also contains creation imagery but belongs to the Narnia sequence.
