Which C.S. Lewis work argues that modern education can undermine objective moral values?

The story behind the answer

The Abolition of Man argues that modern education can undermine objective moral values.

C.S. Lewis published The Abolition of Man in 1943. The book developed from three lectures delivered at the University of Durham in February 1943, known as the Riddell Memorial Lectures. Lewis criticized educational approaches that treated moral judgments as nothing more than personal feelings or conditioned responses.

He defended what he called the Tao, a term he used for a cross-cultural body of traditional moral principles. Lewis argued that rejecting objective value would not produce unlimited freedom; instead, it could leave people vulnerable to manipulation by those who control education and technology.

The book is often grouped with Lewis’s Christian apologetic works, but it is also a work of moral philosophy and cultural criticism. Its title does not describe a literal disappearance of humanity. It refers to the possible loss of human agency and moral formation through a reductive view of education.
