Which C.S. Lewis work argues that humans should not abolish objective moral values?
Answer
The Abolition of Man
Answer
The Abolition of Man
The Abolition of Man argues that humans should not abolish objective moral values.
C.S. Lewis published the book in 1943 after delivering the Riddell Memorial Lectures at the University of Durham. It is a short work of moral philosophy responding to what Lewis saw as an educational approach that treated value judgments as merely subjective feelings.
Lewis defends an objective moral order, which he calls the Tao. In his argument, attempts to reshape nature through unchecked technological power can ultimately undermine the human qualities that make moral choice possible.
The title does not mean that Lewis advocated humanity’s literal disappearance. “Abolition of Man” refers to the possible reduction of human beings into objects controlled by other people or by technical systems. The work is distinct from The Problem of Pain, which addresses the theological problem of suffering.
