Which C.S. Lewis science-fiction novel features the planet Perelandra, also called Venus?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra is set on the planet Perelandra, identified with Venus.

Published in 1943, Perelandra is the second volume of Lewis’s Space Trilogy. The series follows the philologist Elwin Ransom as he becomes involved in conflicts that extend beyond Earth. In this installment, Ransom travels to Perelandra and encounters a newly created world whose inhabitants face a test resembling the biblical temptation narrative.

The novel’s setting differs sharply from the hostile Mars of Out of the Silent Planet. Lewis imagines Perelandra as a lush world covered largely by water, with floating islands and unusual natural conditions. Its atmosphere combines science fiction, Christian theology, and mythic symbolism.

The third book, That Hideous Strength, returns to Earth and shifts toward a modern institutional and technological conflict. The three novels are connected by characters and ideas, but each has a distinct setting and style.
