Which C.S. Lewis science-fiction novel features the planet Malacandra?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet features the planet Malacandra. C.S. Lewis published the novel in 1938 as the first volume of his Space Trilogy, also called the Ransom Trilogy.

The protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is kidnapped and taken to Malacandra, a planet that Earth’s inhabitants call Mars. Lewis uses the journey to contrast Earth’s violence and spiritual disorder with other forms of intelligent life and social organization.

The novel’s title refers to Earth, which Malacandrian inhabitants call Thulcandra, the “silent planet.” Its sequel, Perelandra, takes Ransom to another world, while That Hideous Strength returns the conflict to Earth.

Readers sometimes use the series title when answering questions about the individual books. Out of the Silent Planet is the first novel, whereas Perelandra and That Hideous Strength are separate installments. The planet name Malacandra is therefore a precise clue to the opening volume.
