The C.S. Lewis science-fiction novel featuring Ransom’s journey to Perelandra is Perelandra.
Published in 1943, Perelandra is the second novel in Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, travels to the planet Perelandra, also called Venus. There he encounters a newly created world, its Green Woman, and the scientist Weston, whose transformed role drives the central conflict.
The first trilogy novel, Out of the Silent Planet, sends Ransom to Malacandra, Lewis’s name for Mars. The third, That Hideous Strength, is largely set on Earth. These different settings are a major source of mix-ups when readers identify the trilogy’s planets.
Perelandra develops Lewis’s interest in temptation, freedom, creation, and spiritual conflict through an extraterrestrial setting. Its title is the name of the planet rather than the name of a human character or organization. The novel appeared from John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1943.
