Which C.S. Lewis novel was published last in The Chronicles of Narnia?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle was the final-published novel in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

Published in 1956, The Last Battle is the seventh and concluding volume in the series by its publication order. It won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, recognizing it as an outstanding children’s book. The story brings the history of Narnia to its apocalyptic conclusion and includes the characters King Tirian, the ape Shift, and the donkey Puzzle.

Readers sometimes confuse publication order with the series’ internal chronology. The Magician’s Nephew is set earliest in Narnian history, but it was published in 1955, while The Last Battle appeared in 1956. Lewis’s books have therefore been read in both publication order and chronological story order, which can make “last” ambiguous unless the question specifies publication.
