Which C.S. Lewis novel, published in 1938, is set partly on the planet Malacandra?

The story behind the answer

The C.S. Lewis novel published in 1938 and set partly on Malacandra is Out of the Silent Planet. It is the first volume of Lewis’s Space Trilogy, also called the Ransom Trilogy.

The protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is kidnapped and taken to Malacandra, a planet that readers may identify with Mars. There he encounters intelligent species and learns that the planet’s inhabitants use different names and concepts from those familiar on Earth.

The novel combines planetary romance, theological speculation, and criticism of colonial exploitation. Its extraterrestrial setting allowed Lewis to examine human assumptions about civilization, science, language, and morality from an outsider’s perspective.

The two later books in the trilogy are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. The series is distinct from The Chronicles of Narnia, which Lewis began publishing in 1950.
