Which C.S. Lewis novel is the second book in the Ransom Trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Perelandra is the second book in C.S. Lewis’s Ransom Trilogy.

The novel was published in 1943 and follows philologist Elwin Ransom after the events of Out of the Silent Planet. Ransom travels to Perelandra, the planet also called Venus, where he encounters a newly created world and a conflict involving temptation, obedience, and cosmic evil.

Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938, is the trilogy’s first volume. That Hideous Strength, published in 1945, is the third. The three books share Ransom and a broad cosmic setting, but their plots and atmospheres differ considerably.

The title is sometimes mistaken for the name of the planet alone. Perelandra is both the novel’s title and the name used for its central world. The book is also known as Voyage to Venus in some contexts, but Perelandra is its standard published title.
