Which C.S. Lewis novel is set partly on Mars?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet is the C.S. Lewis novel set partly on Mars. Published in 1938, it begins the Space Trilogy and follows the philologist Elwin Ransom after he is abducted and taken into space.

In Lewis’s fictional cosmology, Mars is known as Malacandra. Ransom encounters several intelligent species there and gradually learns that Earth is regarded as the “silent planet” because it has become spiritually separated from the wider harmony of the solar system.

The novel combines planetary adventure with Christian and philosophical themes. Its title does not mean that Mars is literally silent; it refers to Earth’s isolation and apparent absence from the benevolent interplanetary order described in the story.
