Which C.S. Lewis novel follows the married couple Ransom and Jane Studdock?

The story behind the answer

That Hideous Strength is the C.S. Lewis novel that follows the married couple Mark and Jane Studdock.

Published in 1945, it is the third and final volume of Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Unlike the first two books, which focus heavily on the philologist Elwin Ransom and travel between planets, That Hideous Strength is set primarily on Earth.

The story centers on an organization called the National Institute of Coordinated Experiments, or NICE. Mark becomes involved with the institution while Jane experiences troubling dreams and encounters a different spiritual and moral order. The novel combines science fiction, social satire, Arthurian themes, and Christian ideas.

The couple’s names are Mark and Jane Studdock, not Ransom and Jane. Ransom is the central protagonist of the earlier books, Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra, and appears in the final novel in a different role. That distinction helps separate the trilogy’s recurring characters.
