Which C.S. Lewis novel follows the character Elwin Ransom on Mars?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet follows Elwin Ransom on Mars.

Published in 1938, Out of the Silent Planet is the first volume of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Ransom, a Cambridge philologist, is kidnapped and taken aboard a spaceship bound for Mars, which the novel calls Malacandra. There he discovers that the planet is inhabited by several intelligent species and that Earth is regarded as a troubled or “silent” world.

The novel blends planetary adventure with Lewis’s interests in language, medieval cosmology, theology, and the moral consequences of colonial ambition. Its extraterrestrial societies are not presented simply as monsters or invaders; instead, Lewis uses them to challenge assumptions about humanity’s supposed superiority.

Perelandra continues Ransom’s story on Venus, while That Hideous Strength brings the trilogy’s conflict back to Earth. The book’s title refers to Earth’s apparent spiritual isolation rather than to a literal absence of sound.
