Perelandra follows Out of the Silent Planet as the second book of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy.
Perelandra was published in 1943 and is also known as Voyage to Venus. It returns to Elwin Ransom, who is sent to the planet Venus, called Perelandra, where he becomes involved in a conflict concerning temptation, obedience, and the future of the planet’s inhabitants.
The novel is the middle volume of Lewis’s trilogy. Out of the Silent Planet appeared in 1938, and That Hideous Strength completed the sequence in 1945. The books share characters and a cosmic setting, but each has a distinct atmosphere and central problem.
Readers sometimes confuse Perelandra with Lewis’s Narnia books because both series combine fantasy, theology, and moral symbolism. Perelandra is not a children’s fantasy novel, however; it is a philosophical science-fiction story written for an adult audience and shaped by Lewis’s interest in Christian theology and medieval cosmology.
