Which C.S. Lewis novel features the space-traveler Elwin Ransom as its protagonist?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet features the space-traveler Elwin Ransom as its protagonist.

Published in 1938, Out of the Silent Planet is the first novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Ransom is a philologist who is kidnapped and taken to Mars, which Lewis calls Malacandra. There he encounters several intelligent species and learns that the planet has a different moral and spiritual history from Earth.

The novel combines planetary adventure with Christian ideas about creation, language, sin, and redemption. Its imagined Martian societies are not simply futuristic scenery; they allow Lewis to contrast humanity’s condition with cultures that have not shared Earth’s corruption.

The next two novels are Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. Lewis’s protagonist is sometimes confused with Arthur C. Clarke or H.G. Wells characters, but Ransom belongs specifically to Lewis’s trilogy.
