Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
Out of the Silent Planet features C.S. Lewis’s protagonist Ransom visiting the planet Malacandra.
Published in 1938, the novel is the first volume of Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Elwin Ransom, a Cambridge philologist, is kidnapped and taken aboard a spacecraft to Malacandra, a planet that humans call Mars. There he encounters several intelligent species and learns that human assumptions about civilization and morality are deeply limited.
The novel’s title reflects the inhabitants’ description of Earth as the “silent planet,” isolated by its violence and spiritual disorder. Lewis wrote it partly in response to the scientific romance tradition and in conversation with Tolkien’s interest in imaginative world-building. Perelandra and That Hideous Strength continue Ransom’s story, but they take place on different worlds and should not be used as interchangeable answers.
