Which C.S. Lewis novel features the interplanetary world of Malacandra?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet features the interplanetary world of Malacandra.

Published in 1938, Out of the Silent Planet is the first novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is abducted from Earth and taken to Mars, which the inhabitants call Malacandra. The novel uses the journey to explore language, culture, morality, and humanity’s place in the universe.

Malacandra is not simply a science-fiction setting. Lewis imagined several intelligent species living there, each with its own language and social role. The book contrasts their society with the violence and colonial assumptions associated with Earth.

The following novels are Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. Because Perelandra is both a planet and the title of the second book, readers sometimes confuse it with Malacandra. In Lewis’s trilogy, Malacandra is the name associated with Mars and the opening volume.
