The C.S. Lewis novel featuring the world of Perelandra and the hero Elwin Ransom is Perelandra.
Published in 1943, Perelandra is the second novel in Lewis’s science-fiction trilogy often called the Space Trilogy. Elwin Ransom travels to the planet Perelandra, known scientifically as Venus, where he encounters a newly created world, its first human inhabitants, and a threat to its future.
The novel follows Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938, and comes before That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Ransom is the continuing protagonist across the trilogy, although each volume has a distinct setting and narrative problem.
The extraterrestrial setting does not make the book a straightforward space adventure. Lewis combines planetary fantasy, theological questions, and a retelling of the temptation narrative. A frequent mix-up is to identify Out of the Silent Planet as the Perelandra novel; that earlier book is set chiefly on Mars, called Malacandra.
