Which C.S. Lewis novel features the fictional world of Malacandra?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s novel featuring the fictional world of Malacandra is Out of the Silent Planet.

Published in 1938, Out of the Silent Planet is the first book of Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is abducted from Earth and taken aboard a spacecraft to Malacandra, a planet that humans call Mars. The story presents Malacandra as a world inhabited by several intelligent species and governed by a moral order different from the one represented by the novel’s villains.

Lewis used the planet’s name to distinguish the inhabitants’ own understanding of their world from the misleading Earth term Mars. The book combines adventure with ideas about language, morality, colonialism, and humanity’s place in the universe.

The trilogy continues with Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Malacandra therefore belongs specifically to the first novel, while Perelandra is the name used for Venus in the second.
