Which C.S. Lewis novel features the fictional planet Malacandra?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet is the C.S. Lewis novel that features the fictional planet Malacandra.

Published in 1938, the book follows Elwin Ransom, a Cambridge philologist who is kidnapped and taken aboard a spacecraft bound for Mars. On arriving there, he discovers that the planet is known to its inhabitants as Malacandra. Lewis uses the science-fiction setting to explore language, morality, colonialism, and humanity’s place in the universe.

The novel begins Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Its two sequels are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. The trilogy is sometimes grouped with Christian science fiction, but its plot also draws on medieval cosmology, philology, and Lewis’s criticism of unchecked technological ambition.

Readers sometimes call Malacandra simply Mars, but the planetary name used within the novel is Malacandra. Ransom’s academic specialty is important to the story because communication and the meaning of language drive much of his encounter with the planet’s inhabitants.
