Which C.S. Lewis novel features the character Ransom traveling to the planet Malacandra?
Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
Answer
Out of the Silent Planet
The C.S. Lewis novel in which Ransom travels to Malacandra is Out of the Silent Planet. Published in 1938, it is the first volume of Lewis’s space trilogy, also called the Ransom trilogy.
The protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is a Cambridge scholar who is abducted and taken aboard a spacecraft. His kidnappers intend to deliver him to beings on Malacandra, the planet humans call Mars. The novel gradually reveals that Earth is known in the wider cosmos as a fallen or isolated world, while Malacandra contains several intelligent species.
Lewis used the adventure to explore language, colonialism, morality, and humanity’s spiritual condition. Its planetary names draw on older astronomical traditions, but the book is not a straightforward scientific prediction. The other two trilogy volumes are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945.
