Which C.S. Lewis novel features the character Elwin Ransom on Venus?
Answer
Perelandra
Answer
Perelandra
Perelandra features C.S. Lewis’s protagonist Elwin Ransom on the planet Venus. Published in 1943, it is the second novel in Lewis’s Space Trilogy, following Out of the Silent Planet.
In the novel, Ransom travels to a world called Perelandra, which is largely covered by ocean and floating islands. There he encounters a newly created human couple and becomes involved in a conflict concerning obedience, temptation, and the future of the planet.
The book’s Venus is not presented as a scientifically realistic version of the planet known today. Lewis wrote before modern planetary exploration revealed Venus’s extremely hot, high-pressure atmosphere. His fictional setting instead serves as a symbolic and theological environment.
The trilogy ends with That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Readers sometimes identify Perelandra as the first or final volume because the novels can be read individually, but its position in the sequence is firmly second.
