Which C.S. Lewis novel begins his Space Trilogy with the philologist Elwin Ransom?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet begins C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy with the philologist Elwin Ransom.

Published in 1938, Out of the Silent Planet introduces Ransom, an English academic who is abducted and taken to Mars, called Malacandra in the novel. Lewis uses the adventure to explore language, morality, colonial ambition, and humanity’s place in the universe.

Ransom’s profession as a philologist is central to the story. His ability to study languages helps him understand the inhabitants of Malacandra and gradually overturns the assumptions imposed on him by his kidnappers. The novel’s alien cultures are not presented simply as monsters or enemies.

The two sequels are Perelandra, published in 1943, and That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. Readers sometimes give the trilogy’s second title as the series opener, but Out of the Silent Planet is the first volume and the book that establishes Ransom’s role.
