Which C.S. Lewis book won the 1957 Carnegie Medal?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle won the 1957 Carnegie Medal. It is the seventh and final published novel in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia and was published in 1956.

The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals for an outstanding English-language book for children or young adults. Lewis’s victory came after the Narnia series had already become widely read in Britain and elsewhere.

The Last Battle brings the Narnian story to its conclusion through a conflict involving deception, competing claims about Aslan, and the destruction of the old Narnia. A common mix-up is to assign the award to The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which won the Carnegie Medal in 1952. The distinction is important because the award year followed publication by one year.
