Which C.S. Lewis book was published under the pseudonym Clive Hamilton?

The story behind the answer

Spirits in Bondage was published under the pseudonym Clive Hamilton.

Spirits in Bondage: A Cycle of Lyrics was C.S. Lewis’s first published book, appearing in 1919 under the name Clive Hamilton. It is a collection of poems written during and around the period of the First World War. The poems often express pessimism, suffering, and anger at the apparent indifference of the universe.

Lewis used a pseudonym partly because he was still a young scholar and former soldier establishing himself as a writer. He later published another early poetic work, Dymer, under the same name in 1926. These poems predate Lewis’s mature Christian apologetics and the Narnia books, so they can surprise readers who know him mainly as a Christian author. The name Clive Hamilton should not be confused with his childhood nickname, Jack.
