Which C.S. Lewis book was published in 1956 as his final novel?

The story behind the answer

Till We Have Faces was published in 1956 as C.S. Lewis’s final novel.

The book retells the ancient Cupid and Psyche myth from the viewpoint of Orual, a queen who feels betrayed by the gods. Lewis described it as a retelling of the myth, but the novel is also a serious exploration of jealousy, self-knowledge, love, and religious belief.

It was Lewis’s last work of fiction and is often considered one of his most mature and psychologically complex books. The title comes from the novel’s concern with honest self-examination: people must confront their true selves before they can make an authentic accusation or confession.

The novel is sometimes mistaken for The Great Divorce because both are major later works by Lewis. The Great Divorce, however, is an allegorical theological book published in 1945, not his final novel.
