Which C.S. Lewis book, published in 1950, begins the Narnia series in publication order?

The story behind the answer

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe begins C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series in publication order.

Macmillan published the novel in 1950. It introduces the Pevensie children—Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy—and their discovery of Narnia through a wardrobe in a country house. The land is under the rule of the White Witch, whose winter has lasted for many years.

The book’s central figure is Aslan, the great lion and rightful ruler of Narnia. Lewis combined adventure, talking animals, folklore, and Christian symbolism in a story intended to work as a compelling children’s fantasy in its own right.

The Magician’s Nephew is sometimes given first because it tells an earlier event in Narnian history. However, it was published sixth, in 1955. Thus, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the first title in publication order.
