Which C.S. Lewis book is a study of the medieval model of the universe?

The story behind the answer

The Discarded Image is C.S. Lewis’s study of the medieval model of the universe.

Published in 1964 after Lewis’s death, the book examines the cosmology reflected in medieval and Renaissance literature. Lewis explains how writers imagined a structured universe of planets, spheres, spiritual beings, and inherited classical and Christian learning. The “discarded image” is the older picture of the cosmos that modern readers no longer generally share.

The book grew from Lewis’s academic expertise in medieval and Renaissance English literature and is often regarded as one of his most important scholarly works. It is not a novel and should not be confused with The Abolition of Man, a philosophical work published in 1943, or Miracles, a theological book first published in 1947. Because it appeared posthumously, bibliographies sometimes place it beside his late works even though its lectures and ideas belong to his earlier academic career.
