Perelandra is the C.S. Lewis science-fiction novel set on the planet Venus. Published in 1943, it is the second book in Lewis’s Space Trilogy, following Out of the Silent Planet and preceding That Hideous Strength.
The novel’s protagonist is Elwin Ransom, a Cambridge scholar who travels to Perelandra. Lewis presents the planet as a young world facing a moral and spiritual test. The story explores temptation, freedom, obedience, civilization, and the consequences of evil through an imaginative planetary setting.
Perelandra is sometimes identified by the alternate title Voyage to Venus, which appeared in some editions. The planetary setting also creates a common mix-up with the trilogy’s first book, which takes place mainly on Mars, called Malacandra by its inhabitants. The three novels are connected by Ransom, but each has a distinct setting and central conflict.
