Which C.S. Lewis book features the fictional world of Malacandra?

The story behind the answer

Out of the Silent Planet features the fictional world of Malacandra.

Out of the Silent Planet is a science-fiction novel published in 1938. Its protagonist, Dr. Elwin Ransom, is kidnapped and taken by spacecraft to Malacandra, a planet that readers can identify with Mars. There he encounters intelligent species and learns that Earth is known as Thulcandra, the “silent planet.”

The novel begins Lewis’s space trilogy, followed by Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. Lewis combines planetary adventure with questions about language, morality, colonialism, and humanity’s place in the universe. The story’s scientific details reflect early twentieth-century ideas about Mars, but its central concerns are philosophical and theological.

Malacandra is not the name of the whole trilogy or of the planet in every astronomical sense. It is Lewis’s fictional name for Mars within the novel. Ransom’s journey and his encounters with the planet’s inhabitants distinguish this book from Perelandra, whose setting is a different world.
