Which C.S. Lewis book collects his reflections after the death of his wife, Joy Davidman?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s reflections after Joy Davidman’s death were published as A Grief Observed. The book first appeared in 1961 under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk and presents an intensely personal account of bereavement, doubt, anger, and faith.

Davidman, an American writer, married Lewis in a civil ceremony in 1956. Their relationship was later solemnized in a Christian marriage ceremony in 1957. She died of cancer in 1960, and Lewis wrote the short book while processing the loss.

A Grief Observed is different from Surprised by Joy, Lewis’s earlier autobiography. It is also not a conventional theological treatise: its force comes from its direct, questioning voice. The original pseudonym led some early readers to treat the author as an unknown writer before Lewis’s identity became known.
