Which C.S. Lewis book argues that modern society needs objective moral values?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man argues that modern society needs objective moral values.

The book was published in 1943 and grew out of three lectures Lewis delivered at the University of Durham. He criticizes educational approaches that treat moral judgments as merely subjective emotional reactions rather than responses to genuine value.

Lewis calls the shared moral order he defends the Tao. He draws examples from several religious and philosophical traditions to argue that different cultures recognize overlapping principles such as justice, honesty, and respect for parents.

The final section considers how technological control over nature could become control over human beings themselves. Lewis argues that abandoning objective value would not make humanity fully free; instead, it could leave future generations shaped by the desires of a small ruling group.
