Which C.S. Lewis book argues that modern education can weaken traditional moral judgment?

The story behind the answer

The Abolition of Man argues that modern education can weaken traditional moral judgment.

Lewis’s book was published in 1943 and developed from three lectures delivered at the University of Durham in 1943. He criticized an approach to education that, in his view, treated value judgments as merely subjective emotional responses. Lewis argued instead for the existence of objective values, which he called the Tao.

The book is divided into three chapters: “Men Without Chests,” “The Way,” and “The Abolition of Man.” Its final section considers how attempts to conquer nature through technology might ultimately become attempts by some humans to control other humans.

The title does not mean that Lewis proposed eliminating humanity. It describes his warning that abandoning moral formation could produce people lacking the judgment and emotional development needed for responsible action. The work is philosophical and cultural criticism, rather than a novel or a conventional political treatise.
