Which cryptocurrency became the first to use a blockchain-based smart-contract platform after Bitcoin?

The story behind the answer

Ethereum became the leading early cryptocurrency platform after Bitcoin to popularize general-purpose blockchain smart contracts. Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in a 2013 white paper, and the network went live in July 2015.

Unlike Bitcoin’s primary focus on peer-to-peer digital money, Ethereum was designed as a programmable platform. Developers can deploy smart contracts that manage tokens, decentralized applications, games, financial protocols, and other digital systems without relying on one central server.

Ethereum was not literally the first project to explore programmable blockchain behavior, and the wording “first” can depend on how smart contracts and platforms are defined. Ethereum’s historical importance comes from making a broad, developer-oriented virtual machine and account-based blockchain widely influential. Cardano, Solana, and Polkadot were launched later.
