On what date did Satoshi Nakamoto send the first Bitcoin transaction to Hal Finney?
Answer
12 January 2009
Answer
12 January 2009
Satoshi Nakamoto sent the first Bitcoin transaction to Hal Finney on 12 January 2009.
The transfer occurred in Bitcoin block 170, shortly after Nakamoto mined the genesis block and released the software. Nakamoto sent Finney 10 bitcoin as a test of the network’s payment functionality.
Finney was a computer scientist and an early cypherpunk who downloaded Bitcoin shortly after its release. He ran the software, received the coins, and reported bugs and performance observations to Nakamoto. His participation made him one of Bitcoin’s earliest users outside Nakamoto.
This transaction is often confused with the genesis block’s 50-bitcoin reward, which was created on 3 January 2009 and is generally considered unspendable. It is also separate from the first known commercial Bitcoin purchase, the 2010 pizza transaction.
