What was the original name of the cryptocurrency exchange now known as Mt. Gox?
Answer
Magic: The Gathering Online Exchange
Answer
Magic: The Gathering Online Exchange
The cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox originally stood for Magic: The Gathering Online Exchange. Jed McCaleb created the site in 2007 as a platform for trading cards from the Magic: The Gathering game.
The name was formed from “Magic: The Gathering Online” and “exchange.” McCaleb later converted the domain into a Bitcoin exchange in 2010, after recognizing that it could support trading digital currency.
Mt. Gox eventually became one of the world’s largest Bitcoin exchanges. In 2014, it halted trading, suspended withdrawals, and entered bankruptcy proceedings after reporting the loss of a large quantity of bitcoins.
The exchange’s history is often confused with the origins of Bitcoin itself. Mt. Gox did not create Bitcoin; it was a centralized marketplace that became important during Bitcoin’s early trading era.
