Which cruise ship was the first to feature a full-size Broadway-style theater production at sea?

The story behind the answer

Oasis of the Seas was the first cruise ship to feature a full-size Broadway-style theater production at sea.

Royal Caribbean introduced the ship in 2009 with a large theater designed for productions adapted from Broadway shows. Its debut entertainment program included Hairspray, making the vessel an early example of a cruise ship presenting a licensed, full-length musical rather than only short revue-style performances.

The ship’s entertainment spaces were unusually varied. In addition to the main theater, Oasis of the Seas included an AquaTheater for aquatic performances, an ice rink, and open-air neighborhood venues. These facilities reflected the growth of cruise ships into floating resorts.

Other cruise lines had offered theatrical productions before Oasis of the Seas, but this ship was notable for bringing a full Broadway production to a purpose-built cruise-ship theater. Later Royal Caribbean ships expanded the partnership and repertoire.
