Queen Mary 2 was the first cruise ship in the world to offer a permanent onboard planetarium.
The Cunard liner entered service in 2004 as a purpose-built ocean liner for regular North Atlantic crossings. Its Illuminations theater includes a planetarium known as the first permanent facility of its kind installed aboard a passenger ship. Shows use projected astronomy imagery to present educational and entertainment programs.
Queen Mary 2 was designed differently from most modern cruise ships. It has a strengthened hull, greater freeboard, and machinery intended for demanding ocean conditions. Although it also offers restaurants, theaters, and leisure facilities, its central identity remains that of an ocean liner.
The planetarium should not be confused with temporary astronomy exhibitions or domed cinemas on other ships. Queen Mary 2’s facility was built into the vessel as a dedicated, permanent venue.
