Which cruise line launched the first ship in its fleet, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, in 1972?

The story behind the answer

Carnival Cruise Line launched its first ship, Mardi Gras, in 1972.

The company began operations when the former Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Canada was acquired and renamed Mardi Gras. Its first cruise departed from Miami in March 1972, establishing the brand that would become one of the largest contemporary cruise operators.

Carnival’s early strategy emphasized casual vacations, entertainment, and approachable pricing rather than the formal atmosphere associated with traditional ocean liners. That model helped popularize cruising among a broader mass-market audience. The original Mardi Gras was much smaller than Carnival’s later ships and had previously operated as a transatlantic passenger liner.

The name Mardi Gras has been reused by Carnival for a modern Excel-class ship delivered in 2020. The two vessels are separated by nearly five decades and differ dramatically in size, propulsion, and onboard facilities. The original ship is chiefly important because it began Carnival’s fleet and shaped the company’s early identity.
