Mac Tonight became the face of a 1986 McDonald's late-night advertising campaign.
The character was a singing, crescent-moon-headed figure who promoted McDonald's evening hours. His advertisements used a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” creating a distinctive musical identity that separated the campaign from the company's child-focused McDonaldland advertising.
Mac Tonight was particularly associated with encouraging customers to visit McDonald's after dark. The character's black suit, sunglasses, and crescent-shaped head made him visually unlike Ronald McDonald and the other established mascots.
The campaign is often remembered as a character launch, but Mac Tonight also represented a business goal: increasing awareness of McDonald's evening and late-night availability. The character later became less prominent than the company's core brand symbols and slogans.
