Visa has the largest global market share among the major card networks listed here.
Visa operates VisaNet, a payment network that connects card issuers, merchants, acquirers, and payment processors. It generally does not issue most Visa cards directly; banks and other financial institutions issue them, while Visa provides the network that authorizes, clears, and settles transactions.
The precise ranking depends on the metric. Industry reports commonly place Visa first by worldwide purchase transactions or payment volume, with Mastercard close behind. China’s UnionPay is a major competitor and can rank ahead of Visa under some measures, especially when counting China’s enormous domestic card market or comparing cards issued. That network is not one of the choices in this quiz.
Visa and Mastercard are often confused with card issuers such as Chase, Bank of America, or Capital One. The issuer provides the account, sets the credit limit, and bills the customer; the network routes the payment. American Express and Discover are unusual because they have historically combined more network and issuing functions than Visa does.
