Which consortium manages the EMV chip card standard?
Answer
EMVCo
Answer
EMVCo
The consortium that manages the EMV chip card standard is EMVCo.
EMV originally stood for Europay, Mastercard, and Visa—the organizations that developed the payment-card specifications in the 1990s. As chip-card adoption spread, governance moved to EMVCo, which maintains technical specifications for contact and contactless payments, terminals, cards, and related payment applications.
EMVCo is not the same as ISO, ANSI, or the PCI Security Standards Council. ISO publishes broad international standards, ANSI coordinates U.S. standardization, and PCI SSC develops security requirements such as the PCI Data Security Standard. EMVCo focuses specifically on interoperable payment technology and also runs approval and testing programs.
A related point often causes confusion: EMV describes the chip-payment framework, not one particular card brand or authentication method. “Chip and PIN” and “chip and signature” are issuer-selected ways of verifying the cardholder within an EMV transaction.
