Which crane migrates between Siberia and China but is critically endangered?

The story behind the answer

The Siberian crane migrates between Siberia and China and is critically endangered.

Siberian cranes breed in northeastern Siberia and migrate to wintering grounds in China, with a small western population historically using areas around Iran and India. The eastern population traditionally depends heavily on wetlands around China’s Poyang Lake.

Wetland loss, altered river systems, hunting, and disturbance have contributed to the species’ decline. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies the Siberian crane as Critically Endangered, the highest threat category before extinction in the wild.

The Siberian crane is entirely white apart from black primary wing feathers that become visible in flight. It should not be confused with the whooping crane, another endangered crane that breeds in North America.
