Which course has hosted the most U.S. Open championships?
Answer
Oakmont Country Club
Answer
Oakmont Country Club
Oakmont Country Club has hosted the most U.S. Open championships. Located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Oakmont has staged the event 10 times, more than any other course.
Its U.S. Open history began in 1927, when Tommy Armour won a playoff. Oakmont later hosted victories by Ben Hogan in 1953, Jack Nicklaus in 1962, Johnny Miller in 1973, and Dustin Johnson in 2016. The 2025 U.S. Open also returned to Oakmont, bringing its total to 10.
Oakmont is famous for its extremely fast greens, deep bunkers, narrow landing areas, and demanding putting surfaces. The course’s most famous hazard is the Church Pews bunker, a vast trench-like bunker complex between the third and fourth fairways.
A common mix-up is confusing Oakmont’s U.S. Open record with the totals of other celebrated venues. Pebble Beach and Winged Foot have each hosted six U.S. Opens, while Shinnecock Hills has hosted five. Oakmont remains the clear leader.
