Which country’s national flag is commonly called the Black Star flag?

The story behind the answer

Ghana’s national flag is commonly called the Black Star flag.

The name comes from the black five-pointed star in the center of the yellow stripe. Ghana adopted its red, yellow, and green horizontal tricolour on 6 March 1957, the day it became independent from the United Kingdom. It was the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from European colonial rule in the postwar period, and its flag influenced later African designs.

The red stripe is associated with the struggle for independence, yellow with mineral wealth, and green with forests and natural wealth. The black star represents African freedom and unity; it was also linked to the Black Star Line, founded by Marcus Garvey.

Ghana’s colours are frequently confused with those of other African countries, especially Ethiopia, which also uses red, yellow, and green. Ghana is distinguished by the black star placed on the central yellow band.
