Which country’s national flag has a yellow sun with a human face on three horizontal blue and white bands?

The story behind the answer

Argentina’s national flag has a yellow sun with a human face on three horizontal blue and white bands.

The flag was designed by Manuel Belgrano and first raised on 27 February 1812 during Argentina’s struggle for independence from Spain. Its light-blue and white colors are traditionally associated with the sky and clouds, although historical explanations also connect them with the House of Bourbon and the Argentine independence movement.

The central emblem is the Sun of May, a golden sun with a human face and alternating straight and wavy rays. It commemorates the May Revolution of 1810, which began the process leading to independence. The sun appears on the ceremonial war flag and is also used on the national flag.

Uruguay’s flag has many alternating stripes and a separate Sun of May in a canton. Argentina’s flag has only three broad horizontal bands.
