Which country’s national flag has a seven-pointed Commonwealth Star?

The story behind the answer

Australia’s national flag has a seven-pointed Commonwealth Star.

The large white star beneath the Union Jack is called the Commonwealth Star or Federation Star. It originally had six points, representing the six federating colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Its seventh point was added in 1908 to represent Australia’s territories and future territories.

The flag also features the Southern Cross constellation on the fly side. Four of its stars have seven points, while the smallest star, Epsilon Crucis, has five. The Union Jack in the canton reflects Australia’s historical ties to the United Kingdom.

The Commonwealth Star is easy to confuse with New Zealand’s stars, but the two flags differ clearly. Australia has five Southern Cross stars and a large federation star; New Zealand has four red stars with white borders and no Commonwealth Star. Australia’s current flag was formally specified after the 1908 change to the star.
