Mongolia’s national flag displays the Soyombo symbol beside vertical red and blue bands.
The flag consists of red, blue and red vertical panels, with the yellow Soyombo symbol placed in the hoist-side red panel. Mongolia adopted this design in 1992 after the end of the socialist period, removing the star that had appeared above the Soyombo on the earlier state flag.
The blue central panel represents Mongolia’s eternal blue sky, a major idea in Mongolian culture. The red panels traditionally signify Mongolia’s ability to thrive in harsh conditions. The Soyombo is a national emblem containing fire, sun, moon, earth, water and yin-yang imagery.
Kazakhstan instead uses a sky-blue field with a golden sun and eagle. Kyrgyzstan has a red field with a yellow sun, while Tajikistan uses horizontal red, white and green bands.
